Responsible Pet Owners All Set To Spay And Neuter

BREWSTER – While it may not seem like it, spring is officially here and very soon the temperatures will begin to climb.

For animals who aren’t spayed or neutered, this can mean the arrival of puppies and kittens.

The Animal Rescue League of Boston is reminding people that fixing your pets has more benefits than just eliminating the chance of an unplanned or unwanted litter of puppies or kittens.

Neutered dogs live 20% longer, and spayed females live 25%  longer.  In addition, Neutering male cats and dogs before six months of age prevents testicular cancer and Spaying female cats and dogs before their first heat offers protection from uterine infections as well as breast cancer.

The cost of caring for an unplanned litter far outweighs the cost of having a pet spayed/neutered.  There are a number of low-cost options available on Cape Cod and throughout the state.

Almost all fatal dog attacks involve males who are not neutered, which increases their urge to roam and fight with other dogs.

Neutering also reduces or resolves the majority of marking behaviors.

The ARL offers free high-quality spay/neuter services and vaccinations for mother/father cats or dogs.

With the large amount of animals available for adoption, including mixed breeds, pure bred and all ages, it is unfair to produce more.  In addition, owners of indoor pets who are not spayed or neutered must remember that it only takes one accident to end up with an unplanned litter.
