Retelling of ‘Hamlet’ Comes to Wellfleet Habor Actors Theater

WELLFLEET – An interactive retelling of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” comes to Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater next month.

“Gravedigger’s Tale” will run from October 19 through 28. Performances are 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Using Shakespeare’s words – and help from the audience – the 40 minute performance combines the text from “Hamlet” with original and traditional music to tell the classic story from the perspective of the Gravedigger.

The Gravedigger appears briefly in Act V of “Hamlet” to perform a comic exchange with a fellow gravedigger before speaking to Hamlet and presenting him with the jester Yorick’s skull.

The character in “Gravedigger’s Tale” will arrive with a trunk and a book and answers questions from the audience with pieces of original text.

The show is directed by Robert Richmond with a performance by Louis Butelli.

Along with the Friday through Sunday performances, the company will perform matinees for student groups from local schools.

Tickets are $18, $12 for students, and may be purchased at what.org, at the theater box office or by calling 508-349-9428.
