Retired Yarmouth Police K9 Dies

Retired Yarmouth police K9 Kobi died on Sunday.

YARMOUTH – Yarmouth Police lost a former member of the department this past weekend.

Retired K-9 Kobi died Sunday shortly after serving as the guest of honor at a fundraising event for the Cape & Islands Police K-9 Relief Fund, which helps to pay vet bills of retired police dogs.

Yarmouth police say Kobi was a proud and noble guardian that always had their backs.

“He did one hell of a job as a K-9 and served the Yarmouth Police Department well,” said Kobi’s handler, Officer Peter McClelland.

McClelland said Kobi came from Belgium as a puppy in 2003.  He was bred by a Belgian police officer from his own working police dog.

In June of 2005 he was certified Police Dog 1 by the United States Police Canine Association at a trial in East Windsor, Ct.  In November 2005 he received his Police Dog II national tracking certification in Haymarket, Va.

McClelland said he was once allowed to have Kobi on White House grounds for pictures, thanks to The Capital Police and the United States Secret Service.

“I believe this is the only time a Yarmouth Police Cruiser was on White House grounds.  In June of 2006, Kobi received another Police Dog 1 National Certification placing in 3rd overall in open division in Merrimack, N. H.  Kobi received a perfect score in the suspect search phase.

In April of 2006 Kobi located two suspects hiding in the woods in South Yarmouth.  In May Kobi found a suspect wanted on warrants who had jumped out a window of a house to avoid arresting officers.

Ten days later Kobi tracked and found an A&B suspect with warrants, in a heavy rainstorm.  In July, Kobi found a knife that was used in a B& E to a West Yarmouth Motel.
