SANDWICH – For decades, those who worked at the Sandwich Marina had to deal with no running water and walking a fair distance to use a restroom.
Former harbormaster David Whearty, who died suddenly in 2015, spent the four years he held the position campaigning for and designing a new harbormaster’s building, and, according to new harbormaster John Kondratowicz, the fruits of his and others’ labors are evident in the structure which officially opened Friday.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the roughly $2 million facility, where Congressman William Keating, Senator Vinny DeMacedo, Sandwich Town Manager Bud Dunham and other spoke.
“When you go to see a new building, and it looks like it really always was there and was meant to be there, it really shows the work and thoughtfulness that was done,” Keating said.
Bud Dunham remembered the passion Whearty brought to the project, even breaking into tears at one point.
The facility features two floors, a reception room named after Whearty, and a maintenance shop.
The land on which it rests is owned by the Army Corps of Engineers, who the town has worked with for decades. Thanks to the availability of enterprise funds made available through the Army Corps, the project didn’t cost taxpayers a cent.
“If you look at what the past staff has had to deal with, going from that to this is where you can be much more efficient,” Kondratowicz said.
The facility also features security cameras, a garage, and public restrooms.
