Right to Repair Coalition Supports Next Generation of Law

HYANNIS – Over 40 independent auto repair shops in Cape Cod have joined the Massachusetts Right to Repair Coalition in support of an update to the 2012 Right to Repair law.

The update, sponsored by twelve state representatives and two state senators, would protect Massachusetts car owners’ rights to choose where to repair their vehicles in the wake of increasing technological advancements.

The coalition claims that automakers are using wireless technology to gain an edge via a loophole in the original law.

Massachusetts Right to Repair Coalition Director Tommy Hickey echoed this sentiment.

“Without this law passing, consumers are going to be driven just to manufacturer approved shops, which will give less choice,” Hickey explained.

“It will have higher pricing, and it will be way less convenient for consumers across the state.”

86% of voters were in favor of the original law in 2012. Hickey believes that this update could have similar approval.

“We’ve got most of the Cape on board with this in terms of the fact that we need to make sure, in law, that Cape Cod and all independent repair shops have access to this wireless communication not covered on the 2012 Right to Repair law,” Hickey said.
