Right Whale Sighting Prompts Voluntary Speed Restrictions East of Boston

BOSTON – Federal officials have implemented a voluntary speed restriction zone after endangered right whales were spotted off the coast of Boston.

Three whales were sighted about 27 nautical miles east of Boston and 12 right whales were detected 21 nautical miles northeast of the city.

The protections are in place until May 16 and May 17, respectively.

Boaters are asked to travel through the area at 10 knots or less or avoid the zone altogether.
