“Ripples” Launches In Brewster to Encourage Conservation

BREWSTER – The Brewster Ponds Coalition is making ripples without touching the water.

The first of what will be an annual publication titled “Ripples”, has been mailed to every property owner in town. It will also be available online at Brewsterponds.org.

The publication will include information about the non-profit, charitable group’s work and goals.

The president of the BPC, Tom Vautin, said education is the main goal of both “Ripples”, which took several months to complete, and the Coalition itself.

“In the three years that our group has existed, we’ve discovered that there’s quite a learning curve to understanding what is causing our pond water quality to deteriorate.

Our goal with ‘Ripples’ is to inform Brewster property owners about the important role that they play in keeping our ponds clean, safe and enjoyable.”

He is very gratified that the coalition “has grown to more than 300 families and individuals.”

The inaugural issue points out that the town’s 80 ponds are a looking glass into the health of the aquifer, which is the source of all drinking water.

The simple steps that people can take to help keep the ponds clean include pumping their septic systems at least once every 3 years, the use of native plants to reduce fertilizer and water and disposing prescription drugs at the police station, never down the toilet.

Brewster has over 2100 acres of ponds, more than any other Cape town.
