YARMOUTH- The Rotary Club of Yarmouth has donated 6 ‘SafteyNet’ GPS tracking bracelets to the Yarmouth Police Department in an effort to help locate a person with cognitive disabilities such as autism or Alzheimer’s.
“If the Rotary Club purchased the bracelets then the police department would be able to support it with the equipment from the back end, as part of their normal search and rescue operations. They actually purchased the equipment on their end to be able to… track so if someone does wonder, they are able to locate them a lot more quickly,” says Yarmouth Rotarian John Cooke.
YPD can pinpoint a person’s location within 1 mile on the ground, and 5-7 miles from the air.
In addition to local funding, Rotary District Yarmouth partnered with Rotary District 7950 “[to apply] for a matching grant through them, so we were able to match those funds collectively. The bracelets are about $650 a piece or so,” says Cooke.
YPD will register the individual wearing the band and follow up with them quarterly to make sure the bracelet is still intact and is being worn.
The club has also purchased extra bands and spare batteries, so there will be no ongoing maintenance costs passed on to families.
