Route 6 Safety Called Into Question, Guardrail Proposed

constructionSANDWICH – The safety of Route 6 is being called into question, and two state representatives are calling for a guardrail to be placed in the median in light of yesterday’s fatal accident on the highway.

Rep. Sarah Peake (D-Provincetown) and Rep. Randy Hunt (R-Sandwich) have asked MassDOT to put up guardrails.

Transportation officials say they will look into it but will need to find money for the project.

“I hope that Mary-Joe Perry, who is the director of MassDOT in Region Five, and the secretary of transportation can quickly put together a plan and make this happen, because we cannot afford to have these types of incidents continuing to occur,” Hunt said. “The guardrail system is important, and I do believe that some of the factor that might be creating problems for us in the future were actually exasperated by the denuding of trees in the median that occurred between exits two and three.”

Centerville resident Lawrence Barros, 32, was killed after a truck driven by Michael Dalto, 45, of East Bridgewater crossed the median. No charges have been filed at this point.
