Route 6 Traffic Enforcement Effort Underway on the Outer Cape

route 6 crash wellfleetEASTHAM – An effort is underway in Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown to limit the number of crashes on Route 6 through enhanced enforcement of traffic laws.

The four towns, along with State Representative Sarah Peake, unveiled the Lower Cape Traffic Initiative last week which will target speeding, aggressive driving, distracted driving through the use of mobile devices and driving under the influence.

The initiative will also focus on educating the public along with the increased enforcement.

Eastham Police Chief Edward Kulhawik is excited for the initiative which began Sunday and runs through Columbus Day weekend.

“We think it is going to be a real good thing to impact driving habits and calming people from driving too fast but also paying attention to what they are doing and how they are doing it,” he said.

The initiative was made possible by a $30,000 earmark in the fiscal year 2016 state budget.

“We decided on trying to get some grant money from the state to target aggressive driving, to target speed and more important to have officers working from the four towns together,” Kulhawik said.

Kulhawik said the enhanced enforcement will be different from what residents and visitors are used to, but in a positive way.

“I think people are going to see that it’s going to make an impact in, hopefully, preventing another tragedy and calming things down out there during our busy season,” he said.

The effort began with a focus group by Wellfleet Chief of Police Ronald Fisette which was soon joined by Represetative Peake, the police departments and elected officials from the four towns, State police and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

The new program was unveiled last week at the Eastham police station.
