Route 6 Visitor Center and Rest Area Reopened for the 2018 Season

BARNSTABLE – The Route 6 Visitor Center and Rest Area has reopened for the 2018 season under the management of the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber was awarded $40,000 in grant funding from Barnstable County to oversee the center through Columbus Day Weekend.

Volunteers and chamber staff have already taken part in a clean-up effort at the property cleaning out gardens, trimming hedges, and sweeping.

“It’s the little things that matter,” said chamber of commerce staff member Glenn VanWinckle, “Keeping things well maintained and cared for says a lot to our guests. This is usually their first stop on the Cape for many of our travelers.”

As maintenance and restroom cleanup costs become harder to cover, county officials are continuing to investigate the possibility of a public-private partnership to operate the rest area and have received approval from the Federal Highway Administration to do so.

County officials will work with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, which leases the property to the county, on a long-term lease with a private company to operate a manned convenience area with tourist information.

“It’s been done in other states so there is no reason why it won’t work here,” County Administrator Jack Yunits said.

Yunits added that there would not be a gas station on the property due to its location abutting an aquifer.

“They’ll be a convenience area and it’ll be manned and it will be open during peak hours, hopefully,” he said.

Details would be worked out by a committee formed by the Cape’s Legislative Delegation and the towns of Barnstable and Yarmouth with the goal of having a partnership in place for summer 2019.
