Route 6 Westbound Closed Between Exits 6 & 5

road construction02BARNSTABLE – MassDOT has closed the high speed lane along Route 6 westbound in Barnstable between exit 6 and exit 5 in the vicinity of the Oak Street Overpass due to an emergency drainage repair issue.

The closure is anticipated to last through 6 p.m.

An official with MassDOT said there was a collapsing manhole in the high speed lane that led to the need for drainage repairs.  If left unaddressed, it would have continued to settle and create a sinkhole or large pothole.

The repair will include removing the frame and cover, replacing the deteriorate blocks as needed to create a solid base for resetting the frame and cover and placing a hot mix asphalt patch around the repaired manhole.

MassDOT encourages drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes to minimize delays.

Those traveling through the area should expect delays and should reduce speed and use caution while traveling through the work zone.
