Rt. 6 Bridge Overpass to be Named After WWII Veteran

veteran awardBARNSTABLE – A bridge dedication ceremony in honor of local World War II veteran Louis Karras of Barnstable will be held Saturday afternoon.

The bridge to be dedicated is the Route 6 overpass over Phinney’s Lane, but the ceremony will take place at the West Barnstable Deer Club off Old Stage Road in Barnstable at 12:30 p.m.

Speakers at the ceremony include State Representative Tim Whelan, MassDOT Administrator Tom Tinlin, Barnstable Town Councilor John Floores and former Councilor Ann Canedy.

Karras was a World War II US Army veteran who served in Europe with the 12th Armored Division.

He received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart in recognition of his performance in combat.

Karras passed away in 2013 and the naming of the bridge has been a project his family had sought for years.
