EDGARTOWN -The soil being removed as part of the reconstruction of the main runway at the Martha’s Vineyard Airport is being tested for hazardous chemicals used in firefighting foam, according to the MV Times.
The testing is being done to ensure compliance with state rules governing the disposal of the material by the same company testing nearby wells for the same per and polyfluoroalkyl substances.
If the soil does contain the PFAS, the Commission would have to work with the state to figure out how to dispose of the material.
The chemicals were found in several local wells near the airport. The material is used during drills at the airport.
