Safety Improvements Sought at Rail Trail Tunnel in Eastham

hazmat symbolEASTHAM – A long term fix is being eyed for a dangerous portion of the Cape Cod Rail Trail in Eastham.

Over the past few years, the tunnel that carries the bike trail under Route 6 has seen numerous crashes, due to poor lighting, a sharp turn, and a downhill gradient.

The state has installed short term safety improvements, such as increased lighting and warning signs, while a more long-term solution is sought.

“[The Department of Conservation and Recreation] I believe are going to be contracting at the state level with an engineer to take a look at the tunnel, the structure, to see if there are any engineering solutions that could be put in place,” said Eastham Fire Chief Mark Foley. “Obviously that’s something that’s taken up at the state level and would involve some money and project. That’s a more long term solution, but they are looking at it,” Foley added.

Foley has been working with his colleagues at the Eastham Police Department as well as State Representative Sarah Peake (D-Provincetown) to examine solutions to make the tunnel safer.
