Sagamore Beach Revetment Wall Denied by Bourne Conservation Commission

BOURNE – Construction of a stone revetment wall to keep the half dozen homes on top of a sandy cliff on Sagamore Beach from tumbling into Cape Cod Bay has been nixed by the Bourne Conservation Commission.

The ten foot high, 760 foot long wall would have shored up a stretch of the crumbling cliff on Sagamore Beach and would have been built into the coastal bank and taper down to cobble berms at each end.

Most of the homeowners had agreed to pay all of the construction costs associated with the project.

A coastal engineer hired by the commission recently admitted that the sand and sediment that erodes from the cliff replenishes beaches to the south and the beach the homes are on, is replenished by beach sand from the north.

The replacement of the sand would cost up to $30,000 annually, which could have been the responsibility of current and future homeowners, according to the commission.
