Sagamore Beach Stairwell Repair Moves Closer

BOURNE – The Crab Rock Way access stairwell in Sagamore Beach will soon be repaired.

Bourne Town Administrator Tom Guerino told the Board of Selectmen that a decision has been made about which contractor will be awarded the project.  The Edward Paige Corporation was chosen after putting in a bid of roughly $89,000.  They are based out of Norwell.

The platform attached to the stairwell lost some of its support last June, resulting in the structure being unsafe and shut down.

Guerino said that part of a drainage solution will be facilitated by nature.  “There will be some plantings that will absorb, as well as slow down the water as it moves down the bank,” he said.

Any work on the stairwell that needs to be done on the beach must be finished by the start of Piping Plover nesting season on April 1st, while construction that is not, can continue if necessary.

Guerino pointed out that maintenance needs to be continuous.  “What we’re going to need to do is more inspections, and make periodic repairs as necessary,” he said.

Meanwhile, a lawsuit brought against the town by the owners of homes situated on a cliff which is eroding, remains in limbo.  They are asking for the installation of a giant seawall.
