NANTUCKET HARBOR – The Coast Guard rescued four sailors from the water after their 40-foot sailing boat crashed with another vessel and sank in Nantucket Harbor this morning.

The Winnie, a sailboat out of Bourne, collided with the 46-foot Dragon around 10:50 a.m.

Sailors aboard the Winnie notified the Nantucket Harbormaster by radio that they were taking on water.

Coast Guard Senior Chief Matthew Welsh said the Winnie suffered catastrophic damage in the form of a two-by-two cracked seam.

A Station Brant Point 25-foot response boat diverted to the scene and rescued the four sailors and returned them to Station Brant Point.

“The sailors were all wearing their life jackets and we were ready to respond,” said Welsh. “This was definitely a team effort.”

The other vessel involved in the crash was able to make it back to the harbor safely.

There were no injuries reported and the incident remains under investigation.

The disabled boat is reportedly outside of the navigable travel and is clearly marked.
