YARMOUTH – Even though the 13th annual Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade is Saturday, the festivities begin on Friday evening.
The annual Grand Marshal’s Dinner will take place at The Riverway Lobster House in South Yarmouth. This year it’s meteorologist, and Cape native, Tim Kelley, who has been on New England Cable News for 24 years. He’s a graduate of both Cape Cod Tech and Cape Cod Community College.
Kelley says that a particular event when he was growing up served as a major inspiration. “My dad taught me how to read the barometer. I was so obsessed with the weather when I was little kid, I was writing it down. That includes during the blizzard of ’78. Snow turned into rain, then the sun came out with a blizzard going 50 miles away. It became an obsession of mine,” he said.
The parade kicks off at 11 AM in Yarmouth on Route 28 and will include floats, Clydesdales, step dancers, antique cars, and dozens of marching bands.
Committee member Ed Tierney remembers that the first parade did not go quite as planned.
“At the bridge over Bass River, the wind was blowing so strong that the color guards were having trouble holding their flags. We lost one float which blew over and broke down,” he said.
After the parade, the first two day Yarmouth Irish Festival commences with live music, food trucks, a beer garden, a free raffle for a trip to Ireland and more.
From 11 – 4 on Saturday, Patriots linebacker Marquis Flowers will be available for photos and autographs.
