HYANNIS–The Salvation Army will now be accepting donations via mobile devices, along with their traditional red kettle drives.
Major Cynthia Brown of the Salvation Army explained that at certain locations, Google Pay and Apple Pay can be utilized to donate.
“So, if anyone doesn’t have cash and they want to give a donation, you just ask the kettle worker who’s at that location,” Brown said.
“They’ll help you with the app.”
Brown mentioned that the most notable location for these mobile donations locally is Kmart in Hyannis.
At this point, the Salvation Army is not utilizing credit card readers. However, Brown believes this evolution in donations will continue to grow.
“It’s the wave of the future…I believe if it’s a really good response to this, I can’t see it going any other way,” she continued.
A microchip tag has been added alongside red kettles. After tapping mobile devices to the tag, the technology will suggest giving $5, $10, or $25, along with the option to enter a custom amount.
