Hyannis Salvation Army Seeking Community Support for Holiday Programs

HYANNIS – Christmas is just under two weeks away and the Salvation Army is still working to make the holidays happy for those less fortunate across Cape Cod.

The organization runs two holiday programs to address the gift needs for children.

The Dress a Live Doll program matches sponsors with children 12 and under to provide clothing from head to toe.

Major Cynthia Brown said they have partnered sponsors with about 1,000 children this year.

“That program has been a success for us for many, many years and it continues to be,” Brown said.

Most of the children have been already matched up with sponsors.

The Salvation Army is still seeking donations for its Teens Love Christmas program which provides gift cards for families in need with children 13 or older, who can often get forgotten over younger children during the holidays.

Brown said the program has taken off over the last few years.

“People are really generous but there is always a need,” Brown said. “We are always just making it by the skin of our teeth with Teens Love Christmas because most people like the little kids.”

The Salvation Army collects gift cards or small gifts a teen would like.

“It really makes such a big difference if we can hand a child a $25 mall gift card for the teenager and that family and they can go and do a little shopping for themselves,” Brown said. “They just love that. It lights up their eyes.”

Gift cards can be dropped off at the Salvation Army’s Hyannis location on Winter Street.
