Sand Shifter Finally Arrives on Cape

The Codfish dredge

BARNSTABLE – Barnstable County’s new dredge has finally arrived on the Cape following a nearly six month delay.

The $2 million vessel, dubbed Sand Shifter, has been at the Ellicot Dredge facility in Baltimore since the builder missed its contracted delivery date due to issues with onboard electronics and hydraulics.

A key component of the new dredge is the ability to operate the vessel both electronically or manually. Delivery was delayed further as a result of severe cold temperatures which hindered performance testing.

At the end of November, Barnstable County Board of Commissioners Chairman, Leo Cakounes said the relationship between the county and the manufacturer had been great through the process and that they accepted responsibility for the delay in delivery.

“The company has been wonderful to work with, we do have built in contractual penalties, if you will, and quite frankly they’ve stepped up to the plate and given us even more than they contractually had to.”

The company has been amassing a $200 per day penalty since missing the contracted delivery date in July.
