Sandwich Chamber of Commerce Acquires Lease for New Visitor Center

COURTESY OF THE SANDWICH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE The Sandwich Chamber of Commerce needs to raise $60,000 by July 31 for a new Welcome Center.

SANDWICH – The Sandwich Board of Selectmen recently approved a 30-year lease agreement with the Sandwich Chamber of Commerce for a two-acre parcel off Route 130.

The Chamber will construct a new visitor center that will also include chamber offices.

The Old Kings Highway Historic District Committee will have to approve the building.

Sandwich Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jay Pateakos does not anticipate any problems from the committee.

“It’s like a 1,000-square-foot house. It’s not any gigantic thing or an eyesore by any means,” he said. “It’s just going to be a small visitors center.”

Pateakos said construction should begin shortly after they get a final approval.

“Our hope is that when we get approval from them we can move forward with a foundation and start building before the winter starts,” he said.

Along with the visitor center and office space, the building will include an unfinished basement.

Pateakos said plans call for the basement to become a community conference center.

“We don’t have that many in town. We have maybe one or two conference centers we can use,” he said. “Our hope is that we can build that up to be a much needed meeting place for people in the town as well as for the chamber.”

To get the lease from the town the chamber raised $60,000 by July 31.

There is also a $100,000 mortgage that the chamber will continue to try to pay down, according to Pateakos.

“We’ll continue to be fundraising in the months ahead just to get our mortgage down and to also build up the conference center there to make the town proud of the building we are going to construct.”
