Sandwich Extends Marina Lease for Another 22 Years

marinaSANDWICH – Sandwich town officials have extended their marina lease for another 22 years.

The town reached a deal with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to extend the lease for the 17 and a half acre property until the end of 2037.

Sandwich Assistant Town Manager Doug Lapp said the deal was culminated after many years.

“This project has been in the making for literally over 25 years,” said Lapp.

“It’s complicated when leasing land from the federal government but we were finally able to accomplish what we set out to do.”

The new lease covers the length of bonding necessary to finance the construction of a new harbormaster office building, garage, public toilets at the marina and a new marina septic system.

Lapp said the new construction projects benefit everyone.

“It’ll have more amenities for everyone from the public, not just users of the marina, but also any users from the public who might go to the Cape Cod Canal bike path or the playground in the area,” said Lapp.

Construction on the facilities will be financed by marina revenue, and will last around 10 months, with the harbormaster office opening next spring.

The town is expected to seek construction bids this week, with a contract awarded to the winning bidder next month.
