SANDWICH- The Sandwich Fire Department, with assistance from Sandwich Police, rescued a dog that had jumped into the canal waters early Sunday morning.

Firefighters launched Marine 439 shortly after receiving a call from the dog’s owner, Libby Smith.

Smith tells Cape Cod.com that her dog was chasing a bird while they were walking along the canal and jumped into the water.

Smith says the current carried her dog “Moxie” while she continued to swim.

The Marine Unit rescued the dog and reunited Moxie with Smith on the USCG dock.

The boat was operated by firefighters Mike Harrington and Matt Thompson, along with Captain Robert Black.

Smith says that she won’t stop bringing Moxie to the canal and says it was a “freak accident”.
