SANDWICH – The Sandwich Old Kings Highway Historic District Committee has found the Aerial Adventure Park at Heritage Museums & Gardens appropriate for the neighborhood.
The committee made the ruling last week after an attorney representing Heritage presented proposed changes to the controversial zipline and ropes course which was shut down in 2018 after a Superior Court Judge ruled it did not meet zoning bylaws.
The changes include moving the aerial course behind the 100-foot buffer zone between the property and the surrounding neighborhood, and downsizing a yurt, or tent structure, that is used to store equipment related to the course.
Several local residents expressed opposition to the park, including Carlo DiPersio.
“The Aerial Adventure Park is a blight in that forest area,” DiPersio said. “It alters this genuine, historic setting rich in specific history.”
DiPersio and other believe the ropes course brings increased traffic and noise to the neighborhood.
There are also concerns that those impacts would decrease property values in the area.
Ursula Price said the yurts do not fit within the standards of the historic district. She said yurts are dwellings that originated in Central Asia.
Grove Street resident Yvonne Anderson said she is proud of Heritage Museums & Gardens for everything it has done for the Town of Sandwich.
“I am thoroughly pleased with something that engages our youth,” Anderson said.
She also joked that her home would probably be fire bombed because she supports the project.
Neighbors who opposed the ropes course plan on appealing to the historic district committee’s decision.
