Sandwich Officials Hope to Have Iconic Boardwalk Open for Summer

SANDWICH – Winter storms caused significant damage to the Sandwich Boardwalk and the town is working to get it ready for the summer season.

A contractor is currently working to replace the stairs at the beach end of the Boardwalk, which is closed until repairs can be completed.

“There’s quite a bit of damage of the middle section where there are some planks missing and some beams,” said Sam Jensen, the assistant town manager. “We have that closed off at both Town Neck Beach and the Boardwalk roadside.”

Town officials are now working to get contractors to make the necessary repairs to get the structure reopened for the summer season.

Jensen said the current repairs to the beach stairs will be completed as quickly as weather conditions allow.

Jensen said the town wants to get the repairs made as quickly as possible.

“The Sandwich Boardwalk is a key part of the town and an incredibly important feature of the village and it is a major destination where numerous people like to come and enjoy,” he said.

A recently completed inspection of the damage by engineers shows that many of the pilings are rotted and need to be replaced.

An early estimate to make long-term repairs for the Boardwalk is about $1.7 million.

Town officials plan to ask town meeting voters in May to bond up to $2 million for repairs and maintenance. The funding would be part of an $8 million proposition 2 and ½ override, which would include $6 million for roadway construction.

Major repairs would be completed by the summer of 2019.
