Sandwich Officials Look to Rezone Henry Wing School

SANDWICH – The historic Henry Wing School is once again a topic of discussion in Sandwich, as town officials are seeking to change the zoning of the property for future use.

Currently the property is zoned as residential, however changing the zoning to multi-use would open up a number of possibilities.

“It could be everything from assisted living, continuing care retirement community, office use, all different types of cultural centers, all different types of additional uses,” said Sandwich Assistant Town Manager Doug Lapp.

While no longer housing students, the building, which opened in 1927, is being used for school administration office space, and given the historic nature of the school, town officials say any proposed changes need to be thoroughly discussed.

“People are very passionate about it, and that’s why the board of selectmen have really tried to be very careful, solicit public input and kind of take it one step at a time,” Lapp said.

Sandwich’s special town meeting will be held on November 13.
