SANDWICH – Town Meeting voters in Sandwich recently approved a new multi-use recreational area and town officials are excited to move forward with the construction process.
The $2 million multi-generational Oakcrest Park will be constructed at the public safety complex at Quaker Meeting House and Cotuit Roads.
The park will include walking trails, tennis and pickleball courts, a skate and wheel park, parking, a green space, gazebo with grills, restroom and lighting.
Recreational Director Guy Boucher said the town will work with the park designers, Stantec, to create construction documents to go out to bid sometime this summer.
“I think we’d all love to have it built tomorrow, but I think we are at least maybe a year or so out,” Boucher said.
“We are going to have a beautiful park that I think the entire community will be proud of and happy to utilize.”
Town meeting voters approved the $2 million facility earlier this month.
The park follows the trend on the Cape of building mixed-use, multi-generational facilities.
“We are moving towards new days where the different ages brackets aren’t in their own little silos,” Boucher said. “There are studies and research showing that all age groups benefit by interacting and doing things together or in the same areas.”
Boucher said bringing the different age groups together is creating more of a community.
“That’s what people are looking for,” he said.
