SANDWICH – A Republican lawyer from Sandwich is throwing his hat into the ring to be Massachusetts’ next attorney general.
Daniel Shores, who previously ran for U.S. Congressman Bill Keating’s 9th Congressional seat in 2014, has launched his campaign to unseat Maura Healey.
He said that Healey is too political and that she could be vulnerable in her re-election.
“I felt that the office was being used for politics and not for the people, and that’s what the office should be, it should be about law that protects the people, but it’s become too politicized and it’s lost its legal compass,” said Shores.
He said that Healey goes hard after political issues like taking on Exxon, but goes soft on drug traffickers with mandatory minimum sentencing law.
If elected, Shore would be the first Republican Attorney General in Massachusetts in nearly 50 years, since Elliott Richardson in the late 1960s.
“I think an office that’s occupied by a single party for nearly 50 years becomes politicized and I think it’s time for a change,” said Shores. “I think when our message gets out, people will recognize that it’s time to make a change, and that’s what I’ll deliver as a reformer.”
The kickoff to Shores’ campaign was held last weekend in Cotuit.
Another Cape lawyer, Republican Jay McMahon of Bourne, has also launched a campaign.
Shore is a graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center.
He was appointed by Governor Charlie Baker to serve as a member of the Board of Trustees for Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
