SANDWICH – Sandwich Schools Superintendent Richard Canfield will officially begin his retirement on June 30.

That decision came after contract negotiations between the Sandwich School Committee and Canfield and the date represents the end of the fiscal year.

The school committee is scheduled to meet on March 9 at town hall to decide if they will search for an interim superintendent or launch a full superintendent search.

“A full search would probably take six months to do it right, and if that’s the direction we went, we would do it the following year,” said School Committee Chair Nancy Crossman. “If the committee do to a full search right now, we’re really limited in time, but it’s really up to the committee.”

A subcommittee is likely to be formed and will consist of three school board members.

The subcommittee will take input from the community on what they would like in the next superintendent.

“A public outreach would gather thoughts from staff, the general public and other boards on what this town is looking for, for the leader of the school district and hopefully for several years to come,” said Crossman.
