Sandwich Selectman Inching Closer to Medical Marijuana Facility

SANDWICH – A proposed medical marijuana dispensary could be closer to reality in Sandwich.

Selectmen voted 3-2 last week to support a non-opposition letter for a medical marijuana facility, owned In Good Health Inc., of Brockton, to be located at 449 Route 130. Selectmen Shane Hoctor and Michael Miller provided the two votes against the motion.

The board said it will issue the letter on non-opposition once the owners negotiate a community-host agreement with the town.

Selectman Shane Hoctor said that the Sandwich Board of Health has been attempting to reach the state Department of Public Health for information on past and potentially ongoing health violation by the company.

He said state officials haven’t responded to any inquiries on the matter from the Town of Sandwich.

“I look at this and I say, ‘Because it’s a matter of law that medical is legal in this state and that is the law, the question then becomes is this relationship with this company something that we want to enter in? Is this the right fit?’ Some of the things I had down was ‘Is the $40,000 to $50,000 worth realistically worth the risk for the town? Is the location appropriate?’” said Hoctor.

This isn’t the first attempt by In Good Health to open up on Route 130, with selectmen voting down the medical marijuana suppliers request in 2017. The 2017 Select Board voiced concerns of marijuana getting into the hands of children as a basis for the decision.

In Good Health President and CEO David Noble met with selectmen on February 7. Noble spoke of the successes of the Brockton facility and says the company has donated $600,000 to the local community.

Chairman David Sampson said that since medical marijuana is legal in Sandwich, it would be a breach of his authority to deny town residents its benefits. Recreational marijuana sales are banned in town, following a 2017 vote by Sandwich voters.
