SANDWICH – The Town of Sandwich is protecting the investment it made into building up Town Neck Beach over the winter.
Selectmen approved stricter bylaws last month that increase the fines for individuals who trespass on dunes or damage beaches.
“The main impetus behind this was to align it with our general bylaws which are pending up at the attorney general’s office to have the immediate $200 fine for violating the dunes,” said Doug Lapp, the assistant town manager in Sandwich.
According to Mark Galkowski, the town’s director of natural resources, the citation is $200 for each offense of a non-criminal nature for trespassing on the dunes.
“If you were summonsed into court then it’s $300,” he said.
Town meeting voters passed the new bylaw at town meeting.
The dunes and salt marshes are off limits to people, their dogs and vehicles of all types.
Earlier this year the town completed a $3 million renourishment project at Town Neck Beach with sand dredged from the Cape Cod Canal.
