Sandwich Selectmen Increase Trash Sticker, Other Fees

SANDWICH – The Sandwich Board of Selectmen recently approved an increase for residential trash stickers.

The cost for residential stickers will increase from $60 to $80 with bag fees remaining the same.

Director of Public Works Director Paul Tilton said the request for sticker fee increases was based solely on rising costs.

“There is really not much else we can add to our facility to help us cover those costs,” Tilton said.

“We simply rely on a sticker fee, a bag fee, a one trip ticket, and non-routine fees.”

Tilton said there is a goal to cover all costs at the transfer station and he said that is becoming more and more challenging.

Tilton said increased disposal fees for solid waste and a recycling market that is not great is leading to the increased costs.

“We don’t see that changing in the near future so it is certainly going to be a challenge to stay on top of this as far as making sure we have all fees covered,” Tilton said.

Tilton had proposed a sticker increase from $60 to $75, which he said would have still been $28 short of an increase needed to cover costs.

Selectmen chairman David Sampson proposed the increase up to $80 and tabling discussions on other transfer station costs, including commercial fees.

Selectmen also approved an increase of 17 to 20 percent for ambulance fees. Basic emergency transportation costs will range from $1,137 to $1,456 and specialty care will range from $3,169 to $3,927.

Annual golf fees at Sandwich Hollows Golf Club will increase to $1,015 for adults, $825 for seniors and $1,615 for families. The fees remained the same for junior golfers.

The board also increased fees for liquor licenses. Fees for full liquor licenses will increase from $1,500 to $1,750 for restaurants and package stores.

Beer and wine only licenses for restaurants will increase from $1,100 to $1,200 and beer and wine only licenses for package stores will increase from $960 to $1,100.
