SANDWICH – A piece of Sandwich history will be on the auction block next week.

The former water fountain box, or bubbler, at Town Hall Square will be auctioned off after multiple residents expressed interest in the item.

Renovations were made to the area last year and the box was kept and set aside by the town’s department of public works, according to Sandwich’s Assistant Town Manager Doug Lapp.

“A few people have approached town hall asking what happened to it and if they could have it,” Lapp said. “Rather than give any appearance at all of any sort of favoritism of anybody we decided to have a public process to auction off the box.”

The auction has drawn more interest than was originally anticipated.

“When we first put a notice out about it, I wasn’t really sure if many people would be interested in it,” he said. “But there has been quite a bit of interest and it looks like we’ll have a lot of activity at the auction.”

Lapp was not exactly sure how old the box is but believes it is from the early 1960s when the Dexter Grist Mill was restored.

More research will be done and any other additional historical information on the bubbler will be provided at the time of the auction.

The auction will be held on Friday, October 9 at 9 a.m. in the second floor auditorium at Sandwich Town Hall.

The auctioneer will be Town Treasurer Bill Jennings.

Lapp said the auction is cash only and the winning bidder will be expected to take the wooden bubbler with them when the auction concludes.
