Sandy Neck Officials Receive a Hoot of a Surprise

BARNSTABLE – Park Officials at Sandy Neck Beach recently received an unexpected surprise.

Director of Mass Audubon’s Blue Hills Trailside Museum Norman Smith was invited to the beach last Monday to see the snowy owls – and he brought one of his own.

He caught the owl the night before at Logan Airport. The owl, named Logan, had been previously been captured and banded at the airport four years ago.

She was fitted with a transmitter and was released on Beach Point.

Apparently Logan was not given such a warm welcome as one of the beach’s resident snowy owls, Hope, went after her.

Smith is hoping to collect a large amount of data from Logan’s transmitter.
