Cape Cod Scallop Fest Opens Today Rain or Shine

EAST FALMOUTH – Despite Jose hanging around, an annual Cape Cod festival will provide food, music and fun from today through Sunday.

The 48th Scallop Fest returns to the Cape Cod Fairgrounds in East Falmouth. The event features fried scallops, chicken dinners and a variety of other food options, along with plenty of entertainment, including standup comedy Friday night from Lenny Clarke.

Clarke, who is a nationally known comedian and actor from the television show “Rescue Me” and films “Something About Mary” and “Rounders,” said he has always wanted to perform at the event.

“They called and I said, ‘Oh my god! This works out great’ because I wanted to see the Scallop Festival and you guys want to see me,” Clarke said. “Plus I’ll eat like a king.”

The event sponsored by the Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce also features several musical acts, arts and crafts shows, rides and games, a cornhole tournament and a car show.

“We have all kinds of activities – what we call ‘Food, Music and Fun,’” said Marie Oliva, the chamber’s president and CEO. “All types of food. All types of music and plenty of fun. It’s good for kids and families.”

Along with fried scallop dinners, the festival features chicken dinners, a raw bar, lobster rolls, clam chowder, salads, wraps, hamburgers, hotdogs and desserts.

The event was started as a small cookout by fishermen at Buzzards Bay Park. The gathering grew year after year as more people would be invited before it was finally opened up to the public.

The festival has also been held at several different events, including the the National Armory building in Buzzards Bay and Joint Base Cape Cod.

Oliva said the Cape Cod Fairgrounds provides a really nice atmosphere.

“We actually changed the whole layout last year to have more of a village-type atmosphere,” Oliva said. “There’s walkways and plenty of parking.”

The festival, which is open rain or shine, runs through Sunday. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
