Scholarships Offered by Monomoy Dollars Now Available

HARWICH –  Applications for the Continuing Education Scholarship offered by Monomoy Dollars for Scholars are now available.

Graduates of Monomoy Regional High School, Chatham High School and Harwich High School are eligible for the scholarship, which has a deadline set for November 1. Harwich and Chatham residents who graduated from neighboring schools are also eligible.

The school district is offering two new scholarships this year.

The Jean A. Young Memorial Scholarship for $500 is in memory of former Chatham Middle School secretary Mrs. Jean Young, who was also formerly the co-president of Monomoy Dollars for Scholars.

Monomoy Dollars for Scholars says Young was devoted to all students and worked tirelessly to secure their college funds. The group says that Young “motivated people around her to work to the best of their ability.”

This scholarship is available to Monomoy Regional High School graduates who are entering their sophomore, junior, or senior years of any college, university, or vocational school.

There will also be a total of two Great Expectations Scholarships, worth $2,000 each. These scholarships are in tribute to James Lightbown, who emigrated to Massachusetts from England in 1893. To reflect on his interests in literature, economics and foreign languages, paired with his self-taught trade as a cotton cloth weaver, the scholarships are a testament to the “great expectations” Lightbown set for himself and his family.

The Great Expectations scholarships will be awarded to a continuing education student who exemplifies these qualities, is a Harwich resident, and has chosen a college or university major in English/Comparative Literature, Foreign Languages, Global Studies, or International Relations or Affairs. Over $37,000 is available for this scholarship this year.

Scholarships will be awarded in January of 2019 for the second semester of the 2018-19 academic year. The deadline to submit final applications is November 1.
