FALMOUTH – Scottish and local Cape Cod athletes brushed the ice Saturday during an international competition between the U.S. and Scotland dating back to 1951.
The event was held at the Cape Cod Curling Club and is one of the Scottish team’s final stops on a nation-wide tour, which occurs only once per decade.
While the competition was fierce, representatives of both teams commented on the friendly treatment others showed them.
“This is really a special group of people, these Scots are wonderful,” Russ Lemcke of the Cape Cod Curling Club said.
Tour Captain for Team Scotland Clive Thompson said it is not unusual for his team to encounter welcoming people in their travels abroad, since the sport of curling is partially about friendship.
“We’ve already had emails from previous opponents, and have already offered the opportunity for any of the U.S.A. curlers to come to Scotland, and we’ll look after them,” Thompson said.
Thompson said the current Scottish team cannot come back again in ten years, since a new set of eager curlers is slated to replace them in the interest of fairness.
The sport of curling was created in Scotland centuries ago.
