HYANNIS – The Sea Captains Row neighborhood redevelopment in Hyannis continues to move forward.
The Barnstable Town Council approved the project last month to be built along Pleasant Street near Hyannis Harbor.
And last week, it was announced that developer CapeBuilt Development had purchased 6 parcels on the street that will be part of the first-phase of the project.
It will eventually consist of nine buildings, and comprise of 60 rental and condo units, including two that would be classified as “affordable housing.”
“Those affordable units are not going to be provided at the normal 65 percent median income formula,” said project attorney David Lawler.
“They’re going to be provided at a lower income formula of 50 percent, so it’s more beneficial and proving greater relief.”
The multi-million project aligns with Barnstable’s Housing Production Plan, and is expected to revitalize the area, which has been in decline for decades.
“Improving aesthetics, improving layout, elimination of ferry parking which has been a nightmare for many years, traffic flow, site improvements, just a general overall improvement to the neighborhood,” Lawler said.
The project isn’t being embraced by everyone. A number of historic structures, some dating back to the 1600s will be demolished as a part of the construction.
There had been some pushback by those who wanted the historic structures preserved.
