SAGAMORE – Two young harbor seals, named “SEALock Holmes” and “Alicia SEALverstone,” were released back into the ocean Tuesday after weeks of rehabilitation at the National Marine Life Center.

SEAlock came to the center in October from York, Maine with wounds, parasites, an infection and pneumonia. Alicia came from Rye, NH in September and had ulcers, lacerations and respiratory concerns.

Both seals came to the center as weanlings, meaning they had been apart from their parents for a brief time before becoming inflicted.

President of the Marine Life Center Kathy Zagzebski said the rehabilitation process involves many people, despite limiting the interaction between human and marine life.

“Seals are wild animals and we aim to keep them wild,” she said. “It’s always a bittersweet event, there’s some sadness, but we want them to go out and thrive and there’s a large amount of satisfaction in that.”

While the animals are cute, Zagzebski said she advises everyone to appreciate them from a safe distance.

Zagzebski said the center is now gearing up for sea turtle stranding season.
