A search was conducted Sunday night for a possible missing boater after a sailboat washed up east of Crosby Beach Landing in Brewster.

BREWSTER – The search for a possible missing boater in Cape Cod Bay was called off last night.

The search began around 6:30 p.m. after a Sunfish sailboat washed ashore about a half mile east of Crosby Beach Landing in Brewster with its sail still up.

The person who reported the vessel said they saw the boat coming from the direction of Eastham before grounding, according to Brewster Fire Captain Chris Flavell.

Brewster fire crews responded just before 7 p.m. and the boat was found to have no registration markings or numbers, but an Eastham harbormaster sticker was partially visible on the bow, according to Flavell.

A boat matching the description of the unmanned sailboat was last seen by the Eastham harbormaster on Boat Meadow Beach and did not have its sail raised.

Brewster crews began a beach search and Orleans and Eastham fire crews were called to assist, along with the Coast Guard and a State Police Air Unit.

The Coast Guard’s search was suspended just before 10 p.m.

A total of 24 square miles of ocean were searched by air and boat along with 7 miles of coast line.

The Coast Guard, Brewster, Orleans and Eastham fire crews participated in the search.

Brewster fire crews went out to search the beach again this morning but still could not find evidence of a missing boater, according to fire chief Robert Moran.

The owner of the boat has still not been identified.
