Seashore Issues Safety Tips For Swimming with Sharks

great white sharkEASTHAM – Last Saturday, a great white shark was spotted off Nauset Beach in Orleans, and National Seashore officials are taking the opportunity to remind locals and visitors alike of safety tips when swimming in waters where there may be great white sharks.

Cape Cod National Seashore Superintendent George Price is stressing that beach-goers be aware of their surroundings.

Seashore officials say great white shark attacks are rare, but precautions should still be taken. A California man was bitten by a great white in Truro waters in 2012.

That was the first time a person was attacked by a great white shark in Cape Cod waters since 1938 when a boy swimming in Buzzards Bay was attacked. He later died from his injuries.

Price says swimmers should not go anywhere near seals, as they are the primary food source for great white sharks. Swimmers are encouraged to swim in groups and to avoid isolation.
