Seashore Staff Giving Nauset Light Beach Update Today

KA_Eastham_Nauset Light Stair Damage_Below_Beach Level_Sun_Coast Guard Beach_021916_044EASTHAM – Officials with the Cape Cod National Seashore will provide information today on the plans to open Nauset Light Beach for the summer, and will offer up a long-term vision for protecting the area from repeated storm related damage.

The stairs at the beach were wiped out again this winter, the fourth straight year that has happened. The current bath house is also threatened by erosion.

Geologists describe Nauset Light Beach as a “hot spot” for wave activity, resulting in erosion far exceeding the previous average of three feet per year. The waves brought 18 feet of erosion in the winter of 2015, and even more in the winter of 2016.

The informational session is planned for the Salt Pond Visitor Center today from 4 to 6 p.m.
