Seashore to Host “Plastic Paradise” Film Screening

EASTHAM – On October 10, at 2 p.m., Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore and the Cape Cod Wildlife Collaborative will present a screening of the film “Plastic Paradise, The Great Pacific Garbage Patch.”

The film chronicles the plastic pollution in our oceans, including the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is one of the five garbage patches throughout the world, two of which are in the Atlantic.

Plastic pollution is an issue facing all the world’s coastlines and oceans, and on Cape Cod, there is an average of over 1 million pieces of trash on our beaches any given day.

Special guests Marcus Erkesen and Anna Cummins, co-founders of 5-Gyres will be available for questions after the film.

5-Gyres is an organization that has sailed throughout the world’s waters identifying garbage patches, with the goal of “empowering action against the global health crisis of plastic pollution through science, art, education and adventure.”

Their research in the Great Lakes was directly responsible for the recent federal law banning microbeads in facial and beauty products.

5-Gyres has brought the issue of plastic pollution to the forefront of the world’s attention.

The screening of the film will be held at the Cape Cod National Seashore’s Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham.
