FALMOUTH – Selectmen in Falmouth recently voted to extend the contract of Town Manager Julian Suso.

The one-year extension runs Suso’s contract through 2021.

Selectman Megan English Braga says Suso is well compensated compared to towns of similar size and believed an extension was the right way for the town to reward his work.

“It doesn’t just give Julian some stability or ability to plan, but more importantly it gives the town the ability to know the system that is in place during some of some really large projects that we just committed to.”

An automatic cost of living adjustment will increase Suso’s salary about $2,000 to $184,000 for the next fiscal year. His contract has the same 2 percent adjustment given to collective bargaining units.

Selectman Sam Patterson says the town should look into making raises for the position based on performance.

“The 2 percent really should be in part a merit increase and not be automatic,” Patterson said. “And that is the way the school department does it for the superintendent. They don’t get an automatic cost of living adjustment.”

Removal of the automatic adjustment would require a renegotiation of the contract.

The extension was unanimously approved after Suso discussed more than a dozen goals for 2018, which selectmen cut down to six.
