BOSTON (AP) — U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren is calling President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland an impressive candidate after meeting with him in her Washington office.
Warren said after the Thursday get-together that Garland has served his country with distinction and his nomination “deserves the serious consideration our Constitution requires.”
The Massachusetts Democrat also chided Senate Republicans for refusing to hold hearings on Garland. GOP lawmakers say the decision to fill a seat on the court should be left to the next president.
Warren said it’s time for Republicans to do their job by holding hearings and giving Garland an up or down vote.
Garland has served as a federal prosecutor, official at the Department of Justice and a chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
