Senators deMacedo and Cyr Holding Meeting on Pilgrim Nuclear Plant

Cape and Islands State Senator Julian Cyr.

BARNSTABLE – State Senators Vinny deMacedo and Julian Cyr will be holding a meeting to discuss their legislation; “An Act relative to the operations of the Pilgrim Nuclear Decommissioning Advisory Panel”, which aims to assist the decommissioning of operations at the Pilgrim Nuclear Plant.

The senators have marked this legislation as “emergency” so as to expedite the act and avoid future delays in the decommissioning of the power plant.

In 2015, the plant announced that it would be closing.

Earlier this year in late May, the official phase one of the shut down process began.

In August, the sale of the plant to Holtec International was approved to begin the decommissioning process.

The original owner Entergy had previously said it could take up to 60 years to close the plant, while Holtec said it could complete the shutdown and demolition in 8 years.

The meeting will be held at the Plymouth Town Hall today from 4 – 4:30 pm.
