Sens. Warren, Markey Call For Airplane Noise Health Study

BOSTON (AP) — U.S. Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey are joining with other members of Massachusetts’ all-Democratic delegation to call for a study about the health effects of airplane noise and pollution.

The lawmakers are asking the National Academy of Sciences to conduct the study.

The lawmakers point to what they say are recent significant spikes in the number of noise complaints logged by the Massachusetts Port Authority and other airports around the country.

In a letter sent last week to the president of the National Academy of Sciences, the lawmakers said in Massachusetts the noise increase goes beyond the threshold of being an annoyance. They said there’s growing concern in local communities that aircraft noise could harm human health.

Reps. Michael Capuano, Stephen Lynch and Katherine Clark also signed the letter.
