HYANNIS – The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy is giving people a chance to attach their names to high-tech buoys that are used to study great white sharks.
The research and education group has invited donors to sponsor the buoys, which are used to detect sharks that the conservancy has tagged with acoustic transmitters.
Donors can have a buoy named after them for an annual fee of $500.
“We think it’s a great program to be able to offer and we’ve been incredibly pleased with the support we received and we hope that this year is another big year for us,” said Conservancy Executive Director Cynthia Wigren.
There are 22 buoys for people to sponsor.
When a shark is within a 200 yard radius of the buoy, the date and time is recorded.
When the conservancy notifies the public on social media about the recording, the sponsor will get a shout-out and the sponsors will also have their names listed on the organization’s website.
The buoys have been floating off the Cape since 2010, monitoring great white shark movements in Truro, Chatham and Orleans.
The donations will be used to maintain and expand the project.
“We launched the program two years ago and we’ve had multiple businesses who have been sponsoring each year,” said Wigren. “This is only the third year of it but we’re hoping to expand the businesses that are supporting.”
